Travel Sustainably
Here is how Happy Go Luckie Tours is striving to be a sustainable tour operator:
Steps you can take to travel sustainably:
- We use refillable containers for purified water and juice, less waste than individual bottles or bags.
- We use reusable cups for serving our drinks.
- Lunches and food are provided in washable and reusable containers.
- Fruit and food waste are composted.
- Luckie and our other guides are very protective of the natural sites we introduce to guests. We will explain that touching or harassing the sea life or corals is not permitted on our tours. We want to preserve Belize's natural beauty for future generations.
- We do NOT feed the fish. We believe fish feeding creates a human dependency that is not healthy for the fish and could create a dangerous interaction between sea life and humans. We feel it is much more rewarding to experience the sea life in their normal habitat behaving in their natural way.
- We support the fisheries department in collecting their park fees for conservation of marine protected areas.
- We follow fishing regulations and ethical fishing practices and do our best to fish in a humane fashion.
- We are locally owned and operated and our staff is also local. This keeps the benefits of our operation within the community it operates in.
- We purchase our tour necessities locally whenever possible. We support local stores and vendors doing our part to provide income and employment to other local businesses.
- We recommend other local small businesses that operate professionally and sustainably.
- We support community development projects in our area.
- We are open to suggestion! Tell us how we might do things better.
Steps you can take to travel sustainably:
- Book your accommodations and tours with smaller, locally owned and operated businesses to keep your money in the community you are visiting.
- Eat at establishments that use local products and hire local staff and make ocean friendly choices. Avoid shark and fish that are not in season or protected. In Belize there are fishing seasons for lobster, conch and Nassau grouper. Eat lionfish if you get the chance, they are an invasive species here and very delicious! Ask us about fishing for lionfish on your tour.
- Know the laws and customs of the country you visit and respect them. Learn about the local culture and environment.
- Reduce your use of resources by turning off lights, fans and air conditioning units while you are out of your room.
- Talk to the locals, they are usually a great source of information on things to do and the local culture.
- Remember you are visiting someone's home so be respectful of people's property and privacy. Do not walk through people's yards and ask before you take pictures of people, children and property.
- Volunteer or donate. Ask us about projects in the community where you can make a positive difference during your stay.
